Looking for an easy project this weekend? Here’s a 5 minute SCBD project {small change, big difference} to bring a generic floor lamp from the 1990’s into the 21st century.
I wonder how many of the torchiere floor lamps were sold in the 90’s? They were certainly a popular item from every home improvement store. Mine has been moved around, put in storage, and just when I was about to give it to Goodwill, I brought it back out for a spot that needed some light ~ until I could find something better to replace it. But have you seen the price of good floor lamps? Sheesh!
Then, inspiration! Actually, it was Bluwaterguy’s inspiration, a true McGyver moment. 🙂 A couple of bits of lamp hardware and a new shade completely updated this floor lamp. After shopping, this project literally takes 5 minutes!
You’ll need a new lamp shade and 2 attachments. The attachments came from Lowe’s ~ a clip-on bulb adapter and a finial. I’ve seen good lamp shades at Lowe’s, Target, IKEA and Home Goods. Pick the size and shape that works best in your room decor. I wanted a straight sided shade ~ and found this 17″ burlap shade on sale at Pottery Barn.
Remove the bulb and glass bowl, then replace the bulb ~ be sure to use a round bulb with a standard base. Add the clip-on bulb adapter to the shade, pointing down and screw the finial on top to hold the adapter in place. Carefully place the clip-on adapter on the bulb and straighten the shade. DONE! 🙂
The lamp is part of the grouping that sits in the space at the foot of the stairs. The painted cabinet project was a leap of faith I did years ago ~ you can read more about it here. The framed photos on the wall are some nice bluwaterjourney memories, and another quick project.
This is such a quick SCBD project {small change, big difference}. The hardest part is picking out a shade, and when shopping is the hardest part of anything, sign me up! I’ve done a few other SCBD projects recently and will post those too. You can always use the blog search bar and search on SCBD to see other projects ~ cooking, storage, and DIY projects that I’ve posted in the past.
After this floor lamp easy update, I think this lamp will be around for a good many more years now!
