Happy July 4th! Happy Independence Day? Happy 4th? đ
This morning we had a mini-debate about saying “July 4th” vs “Independence Day”. We don’t say “Happy January 1st” or “Merry December 25th” ~ it’s “Happy New Year’s” and “Merry Christmas”. So, what is it about today that’s different? We pretty much agreed this morning that “Happy Independence Day” is too long ~ it’s practically a whole sentence! And it’s summer, when everything should be short and easy, and that is why it’s ok to go even shorter and just say “Happy 4th”.
Sitting on the back porch with Bluwatermom and Bluwaterguy ~ having coffee, listening to the birds and the breeze ~ is a pretty nice way to start the holiday. It’s especially nice when the holiday wraps around a weekend. July 4th is one of my two favorite holidays, and it’s a 4F day ~ family, friends, food and fun.
We had barbecue and banana pudding yesterday. Planning a cookout with hotdogs, hamburgers, watermelon and ice cream today. And you know I am serious about the difference between a barbecue and a cookout! So we’ve got the food, family and friends part covered. We’re sure to relive some stories and laughs from past year’s barbecues at the old house as today unwinds, and something funny will happen this afternoon to add to the mix. Yep, got the fun part covered too.
Perfect time for a mid-year check in with my #oneword365 ~ present. To recognize, appreciate and be present in the moment. To enjoy the good times. Remembering my language loving friend Carol’s idea to âbe present, not tenseâ ~ as an English major, that always made me laugh. Sometimes this year I’ve gotten it right ~ other times the present flew right past me. But every day is a new opportunity.
So this morning’s mini-debate will add to our July 4th history, and we’ll likely repeat the conversation in future years. What’s the saying? Yesterday is history, tomorrow is the future, today is a gift ~ that’s why it’s called the present. Today I plan to just enjoy the present.Â
Happy 4th y’all ~~~
