Sail or dive? Dive or sail? Please don’t make me pick, I’m on vacation!
So we did both ~ a lot of both ~ aboard the CUAN LAW in the BVI. Saying she is a pretty boat is like saying Caribbean sunsets are just kinda OK.
At 103′ we’re talking the tallest mast in the Caribbean, and most likely the largest sailing trimaran in the world. So big, I could not get a decent photo of the entire boat, but had to do with parts and pieces. Of course there are some lovely ones on their site :-).
I’ve done sailing trips in the BVI ~ and diving trips there as well ~ and a couple that had a bit of each. This one on the CUAN LAW was truly a special combination of both. When the boat is under full sail, she is spectacular ~ and the BVIs have some of the best sailing in the world. AND there were three hammocks around the deck, so I always had a spot to kick back after diving ~ or, after a cocktail or two ~ or three.
We flew into St.Thomas USVI and stayed in the Red Hook area on the east end of the island. It’s nice to have a day or two ahead of getting on a boat. That gives a chance to downshift to vacation mode and adjust to island time. We had an ultra private beach spot, cocktails with an amazing sunset, and woke up to a beautiful postcard island view.
We hopped the ferry from Red Hook over to Roadtown, Tortola ~ ironically named the “Fast Ferry”, though it certainly wasn’t ~ but I guess it is all relative in the islands.
We also visited the Baths on Virgin Gorda, went to the super cool Full Moon Party at Trellis Bay, and generally felt like the luckiest diving, sailing, yachting, hammock inspecting vacationers in the islands. Oh, and did I mention the night dive on the Wreck of the Rhone? No pictures of that, but trust me, definitely one for the “Life Enjoyed Bucket“. We laugh about the “attack of the killer fan”, riding out to dive sites in a Zodiac geared up like James Bond, and my “save yourself” disappearing act during the Full Moon Party. These are a few of my vacation memories, and not meant to be a detailed travel review, there are lots of those on the web ~ but I hope you get the flavor of a very special trip.
Sailing, diving, hammocks, postcard views and Caribbean sunsets ~ pretty much the quintessential bluwatergetaway ~ and definitely life enjoyed 🙂
