And so it begins.
The first week post the autumn time change. I’m only a few days into this and I want my evenings back! Somehow going straight from afternoon time to just plain dark o’thirty without an evening transition, puts me in a bit of a funk every year at this time. I will adjust and get back on schedule in due time, but until then a virtual island escape with an entertaining read, an excellent cocktail and some time in my favorite reading chair will ease me through the immediate transition.
Tonight’s read is from Tom Corcoran’s Key West / Alex Rutledge series ~ which is a trip to the southernmost point, minus the long drive. There are six books currently in the series. I’ve read five of them, and am looking forward to reading the most recent. This week I started re-reading GUMBO LIMBO as it conjures up Key West so completely you can smell it and taste it. When Alex Rutledge makes the rounds on his bike, and Corcoran gives you the view Alex sees in passing – while also ducking low hanging palm fronds and dodging root busted sidewalks – you feel like you’re riding along side. After you stop at Blue Heaven for lunch, or the Chart Room for drinks, you’re ready to ride out to Garrison Bight City Marina and check in with the captains on Charter Boat Row before deciding what’s up for the evening. Count me in!
Tonight’s cocktail is my Island Breeze. Sort of a planter’s punch, but easier to mix up. I highly recommend this as a way to create evening island time during the dark months, until we get back to the real twilight evenings down the road ~ even if the island part is pretend, the drinks and reads are for real!
3 oz pineapple juice
2 oz pink grapefruit juice
1.5 oz rum (I like Pusser’s rum in this drink)
Splash of maraschino cherry syrup
Stir and pour over crushed ice
Top with a splash of seltzer, squeeze of lime and garnish
Drink, read, enjoy ~ cheers y’all!
